Blue Winged Olives or BWO’s are an important mayfly hatch that happens on almost every river in the world. They are a member of the Baetis family and very common. BWO patterns can be used as early as February and as late as November, and in pretty much all weathers. The catalyst for a hatch is water temperature (as low as 38 degrees is sufficient). Many anglers report that these flies are particularly effective when used on slower-flowing stretches of streams or rivers.
